Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) - Services and Treatment for Children
Bethlehem Pediatric Services are provided in a variety of settings, including our community-based treatment center located in Hellertown. The center offers a variety of specialized equipment to specifically address issues with motor planning, strengthening, coordination and sensory processing.
Sensory processing (sometimes called "sensory integration" or SI) refers to the way sensory information is received by the nervous system and how it turns the information into functional motor and behavioral responses. These responses range from walking up steps to coordinating movement for writing to playing an instrument.
When sensory information is not relayed and organized properly to form these responses, Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD, formerly known as "sensory integration dysfunction") may result. Difficulties of coordination, movement, controlling impulses and accepting sensation of varying types, intensities and durations can make everyday routines challenging for the child and his or her family. SPD is distinguished from sensory preferences and occasional variations in processing by its profound effect on a child’s daily activities.
Treatment for children with SPD involves Occupational Therapy using a Sensory Integration approach. Various types of activities are selected according to your child’s specific needs - to allow for appropriate fun and functional responses to sensory input. This treatment takes place in our sensory rich gym setting which allows the child to move and experience sensation in novel ways. Our trained therapists are specialists in Sensory Integration with advanced training in complementary techniques, such as the Listening Program and Neurodevelopmental Treatment.
